Origins and Purpose of The 501©(3) programm:

The 501©(3) designation traces back to the Revenue Act of 1954. This pivotal legislation established the tax codes as we know them today. Section 501© of the Internal Revenue Code stipulated that for an institution to enjoy tax-exempt status, it must be organized and operated purely for nonprofit reasons. None of its earnings should benefit any member of the organization. The primary purpose was to encourage and support organizations that contribute to the public good, whether through charitable, educational, scientific, or religious activities.
